First team back to winning ways

Abercwmboi travelled to fellow East Central 2 club Llantwit Fardre on Saturday to play the first round of the WRU Plate and got back to winning ways with an impressive performance. It was good to see a number of players returning, and the mix of this experience with three of last year’s Youth team promised much for the future.

Abercwmboi kicked off and when the home side mishandled, the visitors ran the ball from the ensuing scrum, working centre Dylan Fidler over for a try to give Abercwmboi an early lead. From the restart, the visitors again went on the attack and worked the ball towards right wing Geraint Cutlan, but final pass was knocked down, preventing a try. After 12 minutes Abercwmboi were awarded a penalty which centre Shaun Davies slotted over to extend the lead. The match settled down with Llantwit coming into the game thanks to a series of penalties allowing them to dominate territory. However, strong defence from the Village kept them out and after 25 minutes outside half Mason Williams saw a gap and backed himself, scoring near the posts with the conversion giving the visitors a 15 – 0 lead. This galvanised the Llantwit side and they again pressured Abercwmboi. They were rewarded when their number 7 went over for a try, converted the outside half, making the score at half time 15 – 7.

After the break Abercwmboi again looked the stronger team and after only five minutes scrum half Tom Owens scored a try to extend the lead. During this period the visitors played some of the attractive team rugby that their supporters have become used to over the past few seasons and they were rewarded with a further three tries, one from wing Jarrad Davies, one from ex-captain Adam Stacey and one from ex-coach Geraint Cutlan, two of which were converted by Shaun Davies.

The Youth team made the journey to Gifach Goch for a tough league encounter and the very young team put up an excellent performance against a much older and bigger side. Thjey were very unlucky to come away losing 29 - 23 with the home side scoring the winning try with the last move of the match.
