Good Pre_Season wrapped up at Loughor

The Senior and Youth Squads traveled to Loughor on Saturday to complete their Pre-season programmes.

After the seniors beat Tredegar Ironsides and Mountain Ash without conceding a single point, they traveled with much optimism, despite several players being unavailable. The youth have also had a good pre-season with one win and one loss so far from a very young, but talented, group of players.

The Senior team started very well and it was good to see returning players Tomos Owen and Jay Brown looking to be getting back to their best. The Village pack had the upper hand in the set pieces from the outset, and after only only 3 minutes number 8 Lee Jarvis touched down a pushover try to open the scoring with full back Anthony Kemble adding the conversion. The good ball that the pack was providing was well used by the backs and with only 8 minutes gone, Paul Edwards used his pace to finish off a good team try and with Kemble again adding the extras, the score was 14 - 0 to the visitors. The rest of the first half was a more keenly contested affair, but every time the home side tried to put some moves together the well organised Abercwmboi defense snuffed out threat. With most of the play in the home side's half it was only a matter of time before the Village added to their score and Paul Edwards and Josh Richards were the ones to touch down after good team work.

The second half was very much like the first half with Abercwmboi's pack gaining the upper hand and supplying plenty of good ball which their backs used intelligently to play the game in the opposition territory. This resulted in a further 2 tries, one each from Kyle Stephens and Dylan Fiddler, to take the score to 36 - 0 before Loughor rallied at the close to score a converted try for a 36 - 7 final score.

The youth team had a much tougher afternoon against one of the biggest Youth teams I have ever seen. However, they put up a very good performance and whilst they lost 17 - 7 they won the second half 7 - 0. The young team (mostly first year youth) are playing some really good rugby and will be a force to recon with if they stick together.

Abercwmboi RFC (and the Youth team in particular) would like to thank Mountain Ash RFC for allowing their players to turn out for us.
