The first day of the 2019 – 2020 was looked forward by everyone in the club after a really good pre-season. However, Saturday turned out to be a day to forget for the Village. The first team lost to a really strong Treharris side; the second team were let down by several player who did not turn up, so they were unable to fulfil their fixture at Treharris. The Youth team had their League match against Llantwit Fardre postponed on Thursday so travelled to Moriston for a friendly, but unfortunately last year’s Ospreys regional champions proved too strong for our young team.
The first team looked forward to entertaining old rivals Treharris, but very few visiting players were from the old team that we knew, and they have obviously recruited well. Once the match started, it could be seen that many of the Treharris team have played at a higher level and they it was going to be a long afternoon for the home team. Abercwmboi opened the scoring with a well struck penalty from full-back Anthony Kemble, but Treharris backs moved the ball very well and scored three tries and a penalty before half time to give them a 20 – 3 lead at the break. Abercwmboi were unfortunate to get two players yellow carded either side of half-time and during this period Treharris took advantage to score a further three tries. With their tails up thee visitors continued to play pressure rugby and ended up scoring nine tries in all. Abercwmboi rallied towards the end and with some of last year’s Youth players bringing new energy, they managed to work number 8 Lee Jarvis over for a consolation try, converted by Anthony Kemble, at the end.
Overall it was a good performance from a really strong Treharris team, who will surprise a lot of other clubs in this division. Abercwmboi need to work hard this week in preparation for next week’s local derby against Aberdare.
