Saturday's match at Llanharran was another test for the first XV at a club that until recently have been at the highest echelons of the Welsh rugby pyramid. Prior to kick off there was a minute's silence in respect of Cardiff Saracens Player Owen Jones who tragically lost his life in the recent storms (see attached picture).
Although the Dairymen have been going throught a tough patch, with only one win in East Central 2 so far, the "Village" travelled there expecting a tough afternoon. In this we were not disappointed as it seemed that Llanharran had rung the changes and played nothing like their league possition suggested. Llanharran got on the scoreboard within the first 3 minutes with a try from their number 12, converted by the outside half, but the vistitors replied 2 minutes later with try from wing Mathew Jones converted by Scrum Half Geraint Cutlan. The rest of the first half was a tight affair, but with 10 minutes left Cutlan extended the lead with a well taken penalty and this was followed shortly after with a second try from Number 8 & Captain Lee Jarvis also converted by G. Cutlan. The home team came back well and had the final score before half time with a second, unconverted, try from their inside centre bringing the score to 12 - 17.
The second half started with the visitors gaining the upper hand and playing some of the fast, open rugby that they are known for. They quickly extended the lead with another try from L Jarvis, converted by G. Cutlan. Further trys from Mathew Jones (2) and Lee Jarvis with 2 conversins by G. Cutlan reflected Abercwmboi's dominance, before Lanharran replied at the end to bring the final score to 17 - 43.
The second XV got a team out for a friendly match against Abercynon and came out on top of a tight match by 24 points to 19.
The Youth XV lost a tough match at home to Gilfach Goch, but spectators say there was some good rugby and some of the players are settling in well and showing promise.
Next Tuesday (23rd Oct) the first XV travel to Sengenydd for a Mid-District Plate match. So come along and support the Bois.
