First League win of the season

Last Saturday the first team welcomed Llantrisant to the Welfare Ground for the first time. On a very dark, wet day both teams tried to play some attacking rugby but were thwarted to some extent by the conditions. Abercwmboi were on the front foot at the start and after only five minutes centre, Shaun Davies, slotted home a penalty to give them an early lead. Much of the remainder of the half was played between the 22’s, with neither team getting the upper hand. The visitors, however, let Abercwmboi off the hook more than once when after making good ground the ball was dropped before the line. They did get on the scoreboard before half time when their full back levelled the scores with a well struck penalty.

The second half followed the pattern of the second half, with penalties being exchanged to give the visitors a 9 – 6 lead, until 15 minutes in Abercwmboi number 8 Lee Jarvis crashed over for one of his trademark tries. The conversion and two further penalties from Shaun Davies made the final score 19 – 9 to Abercwmboi, giving them their first league win of the season.

The players and supporters of Llantrisant enjoyed a good after-match session in the clubhouse and got revenge by winning the boat race. Abercwmboi players and supporters look forward to the return visit in January.

The Youth team had  a very tough day with their visit to Gowerton in the first round of the Youth Cup, losing heavily to a very good team, but they showed their usual spirit and never gave up. We would like to wish Gowerton success in the later rounds of the competition.
