On Tuesday evening the first team travelled to Sengenydd for a 1st round District Plate match. The team showed twelve changes from the starting XV from last Saturday, but the squad players who stepped up all took the opportunity with both hands and will have given the coaches a lot of headaches in selection.
Sengenydd started off strongly and the visitors were on the wrong end of several, somewhat puzzling, referee's decisions. For the first quarter of the match they dominated possession and territory and went ahead with a well struck penalty. However, Abercwmboi gradually came into the game and the half finished with the score at 3 – 0.
After the interval the visitor’s forwards started to dominate possession and much of the play moved into the Sengenydd half until they were rewarded when Geraint (Ralphie) Cutlan finished off a good team move with a try in the right-hand corner. The home team showed great spirit and came back strongly scoring a further two penalties to regain the lead 9 – 5. Abercwmboi’s forwards once again won good possession which was well used by the backs and following a kick downfield they were awarded a scrum five metres from the Sengenydd goal line. A strong drive from this scrum saw captain Lee Jarvis touch down for the winning try.
