Bonus point win at Heol Y Cyw

Abercwmboi first team travelled to Heol Y Cyw to face one of the fancied teams in East Central division 2 and came away with a well-earned bonus point victory.

The home team started off very strongly and scored a well worked team try in the right-hand corner, finished off by their number 6, before the visitors got woke up. After a few more minutes the Heol Y Cyw outside half was successful with a penalty to take the score to 8 – 0, but this was the point that “the village” got going and scrum half Geraint Cutlan replied with a successful penalty. However, the home team number 10 almost immediately scored another penalty to take the score to 11 – 3. After this the Abercwmboi pack started to get the upper hand on their much-vaunted opposition and their backs used the ball to dominate territory. After some wasted chances the visitors scored a well worked try through their captain Lee Jarvis closely followed by one from flanker, playing on the wing, Nick Jones to take the lead 13 – 11, as scrum half Geraint Cutlan struck the posts with both conversions. Half time came with the visitors still on the front foot thanks to the great forward effort.

The second half continued in similar vein and Abercwmboi’ s lead was increased after only 2 minutes with a penalty by Geraint Cutlan. A little later flanker Sean Crawford finished off a really good team try during which the ball went through several sets of hands after being started by Lewis Morgan in his own half. The successful conversion made the score 23 – 11. The Village continued playing most of the rugby and on 60 minutes the players, and supporters, were rewarded when the bonus point try was score by Rikki Evans and 10 minutes later another penalty from Geraint Cutlan gave Abercwmboi a deserved 20-point lead. However, the home team showed lots of pride and rallied to score two final tries and one conversion to bring the final score to 31 – 23.

The Village now look forward to next week’s visit by local rivals Abercynon for what promises to be another tough test.
