First Team lose out to Aberdare

The much-anticipated local derby between Abercwmboi and Aberdare took place at the Ynys on Saturday and “The Snakes” ran out deserved winners over the visitors “The Village”.

On recent form, Abercwmboi travelled as favourites but, as in many local derbies, the form book went out of the window with the home team not playing like a team propping up the division and winning 24 – 17.

It was a tough contest throughout, with both packs evenly matched, and Aberdare took the game to Abercwmboi from the off, but the visitors weathered the storm and, after 14 minutes, were the first to score with a try from second row Adam Stacey. This gave the home team more impetus and wthin two minutes they replied with a try of their own to level the scores at 5 – 5. The rest of the first half was very attritional with both sides making lots of errors and a yellow card shown to one player from each side. In the two minutes before half time, both teams got on the score board again with converted tries, Abercwmboi’s scored by hooker Scott Cutlan and converted by centre Paul Edwards.

The second half was as hard fought as the first half, but the home team gradually seemed to get the better of things, despite Abercwmboi scoring a good try through full-back Elliot Richards. However, Aberdare were not finished, and they scored two tries, one converted, in the last 15 minutes to seal the victory 24 -17.

Let’s hope we can bounce back with home matches over the next two weekends.
